THE 1% WINDFALLHow Successful Companies Use Price to Profit and Grow
by Rafi Mohammed
HarperBusiness
March, 2010
Pricing has long been overlooked as companies grapple with survival, particularly in an economic downturn. But a new book by pricing expert Rafi Mohammed offers sound strategy and a clear blueprint for companies large and small, to use price to create growth, profit, and in many cases, a decidedly competitive edge.
THE 1% WINDFALL is a cogent and well researched follow up to Mohammed's first book, The Art of Pricing, widely regarded the definitive book on the subject. His new book goes a step further, offering the strategy surrounding pricing.
A study of the Global 1200 shows that even a 1 percent increase in price can create billions in new profit. But the book goes further than universally recommending price increases, instead offering a sophisticated approach to analyzing the profit disconnect that exists in business today and a sound strategy for figuring out how value and price play an important role in creating products and prices that satisfy all of a company's customers. It is a deep dive into the complexity of pricing using a range of real life examples from fast food to cars to books and even non-profit organizations.
Rafi Mohammed is the founder of Culture of Profit LLC, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company that consults with businesses to help develop and improve their pricing strategy. He received his doctorate in economics from Cornell University, and his previous books include The Art of Pricing and Internet Marketing: Building Advantage in a Networked Economy.
