OPERATION CHINAFrom Strategy to Execution
By Jimmy Hexter and Jonathan Woetzel
Harvard Business School Press
December, 2007
A seismic shift is underway in China as it transforms from an emerging economy to a maturing one where the barometer of business success is rapidly rising.
With 460 of the Fortune 500 companies currently operating in China, McKinsey executives Jimmy Hexter and Jonathan Woetzel reveal that the level of the game has been significantly raised. In their new book, OPERATION CHINA, they carefully examine the fluid business environment and the urgent need for strategy to give way to flawless execution.
OPERATION CHINA brings together solid research and the authors' collective experiences in Shanghai and Beijing to provide a glimpse into the Chinese business landscape in a way no one else has done. Hexter and Woetzel look keenly at the evolution of management practices, competition, cost, business-to-business opportunities, and distribution issues with a practiced eye. And with real life examples from companies like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble and Coca-Cola and a host of others, they prescribe a clear, four-part plan: set uncomfortably high aspirations; make readjustments frequently and quickly; be tighter on people and looser on controls; and measure learning as much as results. Together, these four components are the key to moving from just managing in China to being measurably great.
Hexter is a director of McKinsey & Company and leads the firm's Operations Practice in Asia. He is located in the Beijing office and speaks fluent Chinese. In his fourteen years with the firm, he has served multinational and Chinese companies in many industries, particularly on operations strategy, manufacturing performance, and procurement and supply chain strategy. Woetzel is a director of McKinsey & Company, a cofounder (in 1986) of the firm's China office, and has led McKinsey's China Corporate Finance and Asia Energy and Materials practices. In his twenty-two years with the firm, he has served a broad range of Chinese and multinational companies on strategy and operations, M&A, governance, and other management issues.
